I agree with some of what the professor is saying but Israel is just so much better equipped than Iran, they also have the US at their back so if the conflict were too devastating I would imagine we get pulled in, there is no victory scenario for Iran here, they need to deescalate (even though they didn't initiate) if they wish to survive. And what comes out of Iran if they do not survive I believe, will be something similar to Afghanistan a fractured country with a power vacuum.

Iran's positions are rational, clear-sighted, historically valid, based on an accurate analysis of power dynamics and geopolitical reality, and what Iran actually wants, if you understand their position *clearly*, and undistorted by either western propaganda *or* Muslim theological *overlay*, is a position that comes closest to actual justice and liberation, not just for them or for Palestine, but for the entire region. 

To understand Iran, you have to understand that they had been under total British colonial control since like the 1870s. The UK's Lord Curzon, himself a British colonial overlord in India, called the British rule "the most extraordinary surrender of the entire industrial resources of a kingdom into foreign hands that has ever been dreamt of." The Iranians *tried* to shuck off the British in 1906, and that was crushed. And then, beginning in 1917, their colonial overlord *also* took control of Iraq, Jordan, and ***Palestine*****.** 

So they, of course, saw this entire picture from a colonial perspective. And both the British and the Zionists were quite open back then about the fact that Zionism was a colonial effort to serve as a "bulwark of European civilization amongst the barbarism of Asia". So Iran *saw* what was done to the entirety of the formerly Ottoman Bilad Al-Sham as it was carved into pieces by the Sykes-Picot agreement, and the divide-and-conquer strategies domestically in those countries. They *saw* both what Zionism really was, as something being *wreaked* upon the Palestinians ... because while Iran was not *settled,* it was still colonially dominated, and by the same force as was Palestine.

And so, even before the partition, seeing clearly what Zionism was, Iran opposed Zionism, and as part of the UN in 1947, they were one of 13 countries to vote against partition. 

Then, in 1951, they got a second chance at their own liberation from colonial control, with Mohammed Mossadegh ---secular, democratic (wildly popular)--- and Mossadegh moved to nationalize Iran's resources  back from the British. Of course, this was not looked at favorably, and two years later, the CIA and MI6 conducted a coup, ousted Mossadegh, reinstalled the monarchy, de-nationalized Iran's resources, and set to work brutally repressing and dismantling Iran's domestic political culture. Israeli intelligence and the Shah's intelligence worked together during this time, and both states created ties as mutual outposts of imperialist power opposed to Arab power ... in an Arab/Muslim region of the world. 

Despite their political system being heavily repressed, Iran nevertheless *still* did not wish to *be* a subjugated colonial subject, and so they organized a revolution through the channels where that was still possible: the mosques. And thus, their rational and valid political aims of national liberation and shucking off imperial rule *naturally* ***also*** took on an overlay of religious character ---so, rather than saying something in terms communists might have used, such as "the belly of the beast" to refer to the USA, they instead used terms like "the great Satan" ---and Israel, the USA's *explicit* outpost for militarist domination in the region, was "the little Satan." Because unlike how we discourse the matter in the West, where we define Israel first and foremost as a haven for Jewish people following the persecution of *European* antisemitism, Iran sees it for what it has always been materially for people in the MENA region. 

And so because Iran was both anti-imperialist *and* Islamic, they cast the legitimate anti-imperialist political aspirations for the region, often-but-not-entirely in Muslim terms ... not least because Iran is not Arab, but it *is* Muslim---therefore, Muslim identity is a unifying factor amongst the overwhelming majority of people who are under the boot of western empire. They cast themselves as the vanguard of opposition to that, and the standard-bearer for Palestinian liberation. The very first week of the revolution, they turned the Israeli embassy into the Palestinian embassy, welcoming Yasser Arafat, renamed the street it was on to Palestine Street, and renamed the square surrounding it to Palestine Square. They evidently wanted to be *extremely* clear on their positions.

Iran has the right to defend itself, plain and simple. 

Israel has 90 nuclear warheads. Iran cannot have one. Why? Israel is a terrorist state, run by terrorists, who have claimed for 30 years that Iran is close to making a nuke. I can say over the past 11 days of intensely staring at Reddit, I have not seen any posts celebrating the IRGC or the Mullahs. YMMV.

I agree with some of your assessments. 

In particular: "I don't know that there is an easy solution here - wars in the middle east don't tend to be very fruitful over the long term."

I disagree that the current approach of bombing then asking for for a change in behavior is the correct course. Previous US administrations were content to let fund Iranian dissidents (Hillary Clinton removing MEK from the terror list) while providing incentives for "better behavior."  effectiveness is debatable.

What we are seeing across the globe is a return to the Dulles Brothers and NeoCon foreign policies. Which will have disastrous down stream effects. Some will be visible immediately, some in the decades to come. Again, this is easy to look up. (recommend the book "All the Shah's Men" by Steven Kinzer.)

Sanctions, bombing, and spycraft tend to harden a government’s position while galvanizing a population against the perceived aggressor. Regime change (to a governance favorable to the west) is pipe dream. The Iranian population will revolt against anyone who they think was "installed" by the west.

THAT, I believe is the where a lot people think this is a bad idea. The general population of the West is seeing two things.

1) Anyone who lived through the 80's is thinking about the war between Iraq and Iran. Iraq was given material and intelligence support by the west. Including but not limited to Saddam Hussein's chemical Weapons program. That war cemented power for Khomeini. It also LITERALLY killed a 75% generation of people who remembered life before the theocrats took power.

2)An eruption of uncertainty. The most concerning of which a lack of a cohesive plan. No government on the planet is going to suffer these kind of attacks and then acquiesce. Then what? Let's say the Mullah's fall. Who takes over? Remember Islamic State is still around and hates the IRGC (who helped the US in fighting ISIS.) As well as many other actors. Most likely scenario is a military coup. The likelihood of an Iranian Military Junta being a "good actor" is about zero. 

Combine the above with a general weariness and wariness of US military foreign interventions and you get a chorus of people hesitant to attack Iran. Not sure if any of it amounts to support or defense of the current Iranian regime.

I think this is true. Perhaps this will make more sense. Iran is the closest thing Palestinians have to an ally, albeit a pretty manipulative and rotten one.   I will add there is a fear that, as with Gaza, the bombing in Iran will continue and the death toll will continue to rise to catastrophic levels. Especially given the escalation in attacks on Tehran. Hamas hasn't disappeared and the IDF has isolated, flattened, and starved the population. ALSO, for what it’s worth, PEOPLE ARE GENERALLY KIND. When they see atrocity, regardless of the actors, they are usually fearful of the at horror spreading. Which, at the moment is a credible fear.

I don't believe the Mullah's are peaceful or aligned with my values or whatever. I do agree with your assessment of "leverage." Leverage "over" the West is not currently possible, but I get your point. The likelihood of a nuclear strike by ANY state actor in the current era is EXTREMELY LOW. Iran having a nuclear weapon would make Israel and Iran the two nuclear armed states in the region. I would compare this to the relations between historic enemies that are current nuclear powers.

N. Korea vs S.Korea (no nukes, but supported by Nuclear armed power)- tense stable holding patters, but extremely monitored and, well, TENSE

Pakistan and India - similar. 

If it is not Iran, it will be one of the other gulf states, in time.  

As for people saying "they're crazy!" and their "chanting!!" I will just say a country that purposefully and systematically uses proxies for the express purpose of avoiding culpability (didn't seem to work out) is unlikely to put a big target on themselves that says "Nuclear Aggressor."
The majority of the Mullahs are not trying to get to heaven, they are enriching themselves and enjoying their power. Theocratric klepto state: That would be the model I would use when trying to predict their moves. If you dig even a little into Iranian domestic politics you will trip over a preponderance of evidence supporting this.

I couldn’t catch when he said anything about giving up nuclear weapon. I only heard him say they would have done if they wanted, and that it’s taking them already many years, and kept shifting the subject to Israel and the Palestinian issue.

Here’s how I feel about all of this.

As someone who is more left leaning, the fact that a lot of democrats or left leaning people are taking Iran’s side raises an eyebrow, at least to me. For reference, I actually just had a conversation with my mom about Iran and this whole ordeal. She pointed out to me that when 911 happened, everyone immediately gained a distrust towards Muslims. As sad as it is, it’s the truth unfortunately. Her view on this whole matter is biased, since she has seen similar attacks from Middle Eastern organizations in her lifetime. I think that’s something to keep in mind with the whole history of everything going on right now. Does that mean it’s right? No, of course not. However considering someone who wasn’t born yet when 911 occurred, it makes sense to me personally why many other people in a similar age range as me are more supportive towards Iran since they didn’t have that experience, versus older folks who are naturally more distrusting of everyone since they’ve seen more. Again this is just my opinion. 

I think this whole thing is based on personal opinions. Sounds pretty obvious, but it’s just how I thought about it. It’s pretty obvious that Iran has a dislike towards the US and Israel. I mean, a lot of us have seen how they have responded and what they have said about the US. And in turn, the US just so happens to have a distrust towards the Middle East already. So when Iran made that dislike to the US clear, I think it was pretty clear that the US would respond badly. 

I’m still not quite sure how to feel about this whole scenario. I don’t like Trump, or any of these other ‘leaders’ who are putting their citizens at risk in order to prove they can win or are better than the other. At the same time though, I don’t want my country to get attacked. My best friend is from Israel, and her views on this whole situation are understandable. It’s really just a mess that we shouldn’t have involved ourselves in. I hope that peace can come about soon, because the people who are fighting for this stupid war are getting hurt, along with people who didn’t even ask for one.

Preventing a state as big as Iran from developing a nuke is logistically impossible. They were careless enough to get caught with 85% enriched uranium...to think that they arent capable of the 90% weapons grade is laughably absurd. Best that can be done is a temporary delay.

I do not support Iran. I do not support Israel. I want my country to have absolutely nothing to do with what is going on in that area of the world. The United States should have absolutely no business in a war between an ethnostate and a theocracy, nor should we be providing arms or funds to either. I feel for the civilians on both sides who are caught in this mess, but I don't want my country involved, it can really only make things worse.

I don't defend Iran and I don't defend Hamas. People on the pro Israeli side often make this a black and white but it's not. I'm against the current war against Iran for the following reasons:
1) there's no evidence that Iran was trying to get nuclear weapons , US intelligence confirmed this. Netanyahu gas been saying Iran was months,days from developing a nuclear bomb in order to drag the US into this mess.
Obama signed a deal with Iran that effectively prevented them from getting nuclear weapons, the deal was working and Iran was complying until Trump ended the agreement for no good reason. Israel attacked Iran while talks to get to a new deal were ongoing in Oman. Iran was willing to come to the table again despite the US unilateral betrayal of the deal.Withdrawing from the Obama Iran deal had clear consequences which was reduced compliance by Iran but still the regime didn't completely abandon it's obligation.
For all these reasons I think Israel's attack is an act of aggression, Israel chose war over diplomacy and wants to drag the US into a regional war.
2) Iran is part of the non proliferation agreement, they allowed IAEA inspectors until recently. Israel refuses to officially acknowledge its nuclear arsenal, never alowed any inspections since it isn't part of the treaty. Everything Israel has done everything it is accusing Iran of when it comes to nuclear weapons 
3) Sure the Iranian regime has often vowed to destroy Israel and has propped up proxies all around the middle east. The point is that war should be the last resort. Israel could have ensured it's safety by supporting western diplomatic efforts to bring Iran to agree to a new nuclear deal. Regime change isn't the solution,and it's only solidifying the Iranian government while also killing civilians. As of today over 200 Iranian civilians have been killed by Israeli strikes.Now even anti government Iranians feel under attack as a nation and Israel has been seriously hit with dozens of civilian casualties by. Complete defeat of Iran is unlikely to occur only through missiles and air strikes , a ground invasion would be pretty much suicid*l. This will make things worse for all peoples of the middle east.

For all these reasons I'm against this war and not being a war hawk doesn't make me pro Iranian regime

Here is my pov. 
Had it been a pure Iran vs Israel war, it would make sense. 
But that's not the case. 
USA is a evil nation who wants wars to keep their military industry going. 
They are done with Syria, yemen etc. 

Ukraine is going on... 
Iran is the new front, once it ends, they will start war with Venezuela and when it ends, there next target is China and India. 

They already have overthrown an elected govt in Bangladesh now run by jihadi.... proxy of USA. 
It is only to start a war front with India. They already have Pakistan as puppet. 

I will not be surprised if they do the same with India what have done with Iraq, Iran etc.

Just to make a point, since I’m sure people will try and compare this to Iraq. This situation is NOT the same. We know that Iran uranium enriched to 60% (far higher than anything needed for civilian use). The IAEA has confirmed this much. In Iraq there were only suspicions and a few intelligence reports. Here, we have quite a bit more data, and from an international source no less.

Some other differences: no boots on the ground, no meddling in internal Iranian politics (to this point), no military bases established in Iran. The US dropped a handful of bombs and is done. Quite different from a full blown invasion.

You're spot on here. Any major conflict involving Iran, a significant oil producer, would likely cause a spike in crude oil prices. Disruptions in supply chains and increased geopolitical risk would drive prices up. 

Besides oil and gold, you might see increased volatility in global markets. Stocks related to defense, security, or energy could see fluctuations. Consumer goods and tech stocks could suffer if the market sentiment turns negative.

Nah. Not much impact. 

Market has already factored Iran-Israel war, dipped and is now back up. 

Iran is not a major supplier of crude oil or gas to any major economy. It doesn’t even supply to its neighbours due to sanctions. I don’t see any major disruption of crude oil supply from Iran. 

Now it’s a different matter, if Iran starts blowing up crude oil and gas tankers in Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. But even then, the disruption there will be largely European nations which are now heavily reliant on middle eastern oil and gas.

India has been reducing its purchase from middle eastern countries and soaking up Russian oil due to heavy discount. 

Iran is so unplugged from the world that it doesn’t have wherewithal to affect anything baring suicide missions in gulf. 

In case Iran decides to blow up tankers, it will face the wrath of the whole world and it will become impossible for Iranian regime to save itself. 

Anything short of blowing up tankers in gulf, I don’t see any major dip in market. If they blow up, May be markets will dip 5-10% but should recover quickly.

Highly complicated and layered. 

Israel hit Iran while the US was negotiating with them. It is speculated that Iran wanted first Israel to de nuclearise, this made Israel insecure considering Donald Trump's obsession of being a peace keeper. If this speculation is true US and Israel are drifting apart (at least in the term of Donald Trump). 

US was planning military actions against Iran with the help of Pakistan so no idea what will happen to that contingency plan. Will that again make Pakistan a not so important partner for US? No idea. 

India is mostly confused about too many things happening around. Better to just focus on ourselves right now. Too much chaos outside.

From India's perspective, toppling of Iran regime will be good thing.

History:

Iran

* Iran (Shah, who later switched to neutral) had helped Pak during 1965 and 1971 war.
* Iranian regime have spoken against India on Kashmir
* Hamas  (Iran funded) operatives were in PoK (before Pahalgam attack)
* China has a 25 year deal with Iran for Oil supply.

The best you can expect is for Iran to stay neutral and most probable case will be it helps Pak (covertly)

  
Israel:

* Helped India during 1971 (even though we were pro palestine and established diplomatic relations with Israel only in 1992) and 1999. 
* Also helped us retaliate for Pulwama and Pahalgam attack
* They truly want to weaken Pakistan, as Pak will definitely become a thorn in their side (Pak were part of 1948, 1967 and 1973 war against Israel)

Israel will always support us in a war with Pak (even if India doesn't openly admit).

Also we need to learn from Israel, on how proactively they dismantled all Iranian proxies after 7th Oct attack. Hamas and Hezbollah are totally gone and they captured Mount Hermon in Syria as it will allow them to install radars and cut any supplies to Hezbollah (India has given up lands during our war with Pak and also lost some lands). Bashar/Syria is no longer allied with Iran. Houthis are a nuisance at best. Israel will go after Iranian regime, cause it's an existential threat. Iran is alone in this war. Also Israel shows why India needs to invest in R&amp;D &amp; developing own defense industry, for a small country they punch very much above their weight, coz of tech.

  
ME:

* Sunni ME countries will not want a Shia Iran to have nuclear weapons, this will completely change the power dynamics in ME.

  
Regime Change:

A regime change will most likely bring in Shah or some else who is moderate and less interested in causing terrorism in other countries. 

* No sanctions (on &amp; off) on chabahar port which means a stable route for India to connect with Afg, central asia and EU (bypassing Turkey). 
* Lower Oil prices
* Sunni's ME reliance on Pak decreases further with Iran no longer viewed as a threat.
* Israel support for Azerbaijan will go away (they want air bases in case of war, hence the alliance)



If India helps Israel, it will help us in the long run.

It seems like Iran was very close to having nuclear weapons. Since it's main goal Is to destroy Israel, I understand why Israel had to attack their nuclear plan and eliminate their nuclear scientists and leaders. Then Iran declared back and sent rockets to populated areas in Tel Aviv, and so on and on...

Not our business and Israel probably wins this conflict. Their AF and Army are experienced in fucking over Arab forces for more than half a century now I think. This is the same country that defended itself against 7 Arab countries and swept away the Sinai peninsula in weeks.

Israel is going to come out on top, Iran can’t defend their capital and relies on long range, imprecise shots. Israel is hitting Iran’s military where it hurts. Iran is going throw fits but they won’t come back militarily from a defeat like this

Peter Zeihan recently put out a video on Saudis postulating that Saudi have lost the 'oilogopoly'. Oil prices are being driven down and US is not interested in Middle East oil right now. And for those reasons, Saudi's might be wanting to take out another player from the market.   
Money speaks and don't listen to all the press statements. Saudis are happy with Israeli strikes.

I hope things will get better for Iran.

If Israel and the U.S. can choke their sky-daddy-induced government and create a secular democratic Iran, it would be nice. Islam is a far-right death cult started by an illiterate, pdfile warlord. It needs to go, domesticating it or making it inert would only make the world a better place.

When you mix Religion aka sky daddy fan club with politics that society  nation,country is doomed. Esp religions like Islam. Just look at all those Muslim majority nations, most of them ultra backward troglodytes.
